The number of wenshou (zoomorphs) on the roof indicates the importance of the building; this hall includes all nine sons of the dragon between the chicken and the qilin; only the Hall of Supreme Harmony has one more. The roof animals are apotropaic, protecting against evils such as fire, windstorms, and hail.
