Hall of Middle Harmony

Forbidden City, Beijing (map)

This small square building is located between the Hall of Supreme Harmony (south, out of photo to the right) and the Hall of Preserving Harmony (north, photo left) on the elevated platform of the Outer Court. It was used as a staging area during the emperor's ceremonial progression from north to south, where he could stop to take refreshment and prepare for his grand entrance into the main hall. A similar staging area is used at the Temple of Heaven.
