This instrument is, disregarding its marvellous lacework of decoration, just the "altitude" half of the theodolite (see previous two pages). By lining it up on a celestial body, the altitude coordinate (angle above the horizon) could be read from a pointer scale. A view of its mechanism is shown on the next page.
