Altazimuth

The instrument on the left is, in effect, the azimuth half of the azimuth theodolite on the previous page. An observer lines up a celestial object in the tall vertical slot, then reads off its azimuth from a scale on the equatorial wheel. The instrument on the right is an ecliptic armilla (later page).
